I’ve spoken in the past of my love and support of women directors. So I thought for February, my blog should review mostly movies directed by females. I’m very much looking forward to doing this and reviewing some excellent movies, plus highlighting the sheer talent and work ethic of female directors.
Some of the films I’ll be checking out are;
- The Hitch-Hiker ( Ida Lupino)
- Viceroy’s House ( Gurinder Chadha)
- Belle ( Amma Asante)
- Blue Steel( Kathryn Bigelow)
- Our Kind of Traitor ( Susanna White)
- In the Cut( Jane Campion)

I always liked ‘Blue Steel’. The idea has been copied a bit since, but it was something fresh at the time. And besides Jamie Lee Curtis, Ron Silver is very good too.
Cheers, Pete.

I can’t wait to watch them, Maddy. I remember you mentioning The Hitch-Hiker recently, so I knew that had to go on the list.

Great idea. I’m eager to do a focus on female directors myself in the early part of 2018.
I saw Blue Steel recently and wasn’t fond of it. Might I suggest Bigelow’s Near Dark as an alternative/addition?
Gurinder Chadha is a good one to check out. Her early work for Channel 4 Films was worthy of praise. Lynne Ramsey’s another good one to try – perhaps best known for We Need To Talk About Kevin but Ratcatcher is a must see.

That’s wonderful that you are planning that. I’ll definitely consider the alternative choice you mentioned.
