A while back I did a post on the last shots of a movie, this post is asking about the first scenes that appear. As with the last scene of a movie, the opening has to be memorable and grab the attention of the audience straight away. If I was to list opening scenes that I liked, I would need thousands of pages. So think to yourself which opening scene is the best in your eyes and the reasons why?

Like yourself, I would need reams of pages to jot down my favourite opening scene in a film. For the purpose of brevity I’d have to say the opening scene of Once Upon a Time in the West. The creak of the windmill, the lazy buzzing of the fly, the sound of Jack Elam rocking in his seat, the water dripping onto Woody Strode’s hat and over it all the wind blowing in the background.Truly epic. 🙂

I’ve got a few favourites. My number one is probably incredibly predictable: Werckmeister Harmonies. But I also love the opening scenes of Apocalypse Now, Sans Soleil, Somewhere, Antichrist, Once Upon a Time in the West….

I tend to like opening scenes that show the end at the beginning, but without you realizing it until the end. Such as Inception.

I also love good opening title sequences (somewhat of a dying art) — are we counting those? — so pretty much anything by David Fincher. Se7en, Fight Club, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

Children of Men is a great opening sequences- all seems calm and ordinary when Clive Owen gets his coffee from a shop- but as he walks down the street the same shop expodes and we hear the ringing in his ears! Genius by Alfonso Cuaron!

Not really an opening scene, but the most memorable to me is the opening credits of Enter the Void.

Lots of great choices mentioned above, but I really like Mike’s suggestion of Once Upon a Time in the West. That opening scene is unforgettable.

I have to say that the opening scene for Resident Evil: Retribution (the latest one) is pretty impressive. It’s a large scale, slo-mo fight scene in reverse…very good!

Dawn of the dead (original), starts off with a static shot of a red wall then reveals fran sleeping against it, sand slowly reveals the chaos of a TV studio at the end of the world. It sums up th eentire tone of the movie the violence and the fall of society.
