My answer to the question I pose is that I find her to be an extremely gifted and beautiful director. The way she creates a mood and feeling through visuals and music is gorgeous. Her movies tap into real emotions of alienation and loneliness, while still having something of a quirky humour. You’ve heard what I think, now I want to know what you make of Sofia Coppola?

“The Bling Ring” (2013) is… okay. It’s a bit self-indulgent, and tarts itself up in the same way that its protagonists do, but unironically so. Does get a bit masturbatey, however.

I think that’s the only film of hers, except The Beguiled, that I haven’t seen yet. The rest of her films have a certain aura about them and reflective melancholy.

I think she was trying something new as her other fikms were made in a pretty similar (and brilliant way). Did you find ‘The Blind Ring’ similar to ‘Spring Breakers’? Harmony Corine in his earlier movies had sinilar feeling, just fucked up and taken to the extreme.

I think she is incredibly talented but needs to find the right story and nerve. If all she’s ever done was Lost in Translation, I’d still say it’s one of the best movies ever. Damn, it even brought back to life Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine from his hiatus.

I think her films are quite personal and a little bit different from what else is out there. I can see that her films may not be to all tastes, but even those who don’t really like her, still say she has talent.

Yep, I know what you mean. But it still worked for me with that movie haha. It’s not so much about liking or not – to like something may be a secondary thing. Being able to appreciate something is different, that’s probably what I actually wanted to say. Like I appreciate and understand the value of certain movies/artists/albums/songs, but it doesn’t necessarily mean I deeply like them.

I might be unpopular, (I know I will) but here goes.
She would never have got a look in, if her father wasn’t Francis Ford Coppola, let’s face that fact. Her acting in Godfather 3 was just plain awful, come on!
Lost In Translation was good because of Murray and Johansson. As writing and direction goes, it was neither here nor there, if anyone else had acted in it.
Sorry, but that’s what I think. I will go into hiding from all the Sofia fans, in 10 minutes! 🙂
Cheers, Pete.

I agree with you. Were it not for her father she wouldn’t have a career. The Virgin Suicides was visually nice to look at, and the acting was great, but the plot certainly wasn’t. Marie Antoinette was another pretty, but DULL film. To me Bill Murray, Giovanni Ribisi, the cinematography, and the soundtrack were the best things about Lost in Translation. As we saw from the Godfather: Part 3 (which she ruined) and the Outsiders she was a terrible actress, which is probably why she moved into directing. Extremely easy career path with opportunities thrown her way simply because of her lineage.

I have to be honest and say I think she’s a bit overrated. My favorite movie of hers is The Virgin Suicides, which I think was a solid and faithful adaptation of the book. I also somewhat enjoyed Marie Antoinette, and Somewhere. I thought Lost In Translation was okay, but mostly because of the outstanding cast, not because of the movie itself. And I’m not even going to get started on The Bling Ring. Ugh!😒

Thanks for giving your thoughts Kim. The Virgin Suicides is a really vivid depiction of adolescent curiosity and isolation, loved how she got all that across. It’s been a while since I last saw Lost in Translation, will have to view it again. I take it The Bling Ring wasn’t your thing?

I like her and want her to be great not because she’s the daughter of you-know-who, but because she’s a woman and we have far too few directors out there. She’s not as good as Julie Taymor or Jane Campion, but she could be if she kept working it. I like her as a director more than as a writer.
