Today is the day in which we honour and give thanks to the fathers of the world. I myself am lucky to have a great dad who I respect and love. The importance of today had me thinking about how fatherhood is portrayed on screen. And so I ask everyone, who are the best fathers or father figures to grace the cinema and television screens? Its a question that I think will be received with many diverse answers. And once again, Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there.
Happy Father’s Day

My favourite TV father is Doctor Who’s Peter Tyler. In the episode suitably titled “Father’s Day”, Rose asked the Doctor to take her back in time to meet her Father before he died, but decides to save him. Doing so creates a paradox, and Pete realises that the only way to fix everything is to sacrifice himself to restore the status quo.

I remember that episode. I’m not the biggest fan of Doctor Who, but I did watch it for a while when I was about 9 years old. That episode you speak of was emotional.

My dad died in the late 1980s, so I haven’t celebrated Fathers’ Day for a long time.
However, I did get a ‘Grandad’ present and card, from my 18 month-old step-grandson. A nice etched wine glass. Just my sort of thing!
Regards, Pete.

I’m sorry to hear about your father Pete, I can understand why you haven’t celebrated the day for a long time. A wine glass, very classy.

To be honest, we didn’t get on that well. He left my mum when I was 24, and I never saw him again.

I’m good man, weather’s been good where I am so I’ve been able to lie out in the sun. Also seen a few great movies and reviewed them.

Nice. Weather has been crap here. It’s always raining and I’m getting over a little cold.
I don’t watch many movies. Most of my free time goes to gaming or spending time with the family.

Sorry to hear about the bad weather were you are. I’ve been expanding my horizons on movies, and of course finding some sexy ones.

I did a quiz for great movie dads. Next year I’ll do TV ones. It’s great you’re so close to yours. I am too. Oh and I forgot about Mrs Doubtfire. Seriously you have some of the best fans around. Not for the first time, kudos to your blog.

I don’t have a father so this day is none of my business. My favourite fathers in movies are in Big Fish and Catch Me If You Can….and might as well through in Finding Dory !

Bill Nighy in About Time which I wrote about in my first blog post. If you could travel through time and you had a son you’d do what Bill did. Commander Adama in Battlestar Galactaca reboot. Tough and brave but his son he’d do anything for. Father of the nation Abraham Lincoln as played by Daniel Day Lewis. Spielberg never misses an opportunity to paint Honest Abe in a paternal light including when Daddy has had enough and slams his hand down on a table like your Dad would at dinner. Harrison Ford as Jack Ryan in Patriot Games, I dare anyone not to get upset when he goes to the hospital to see his family. The classic Gregory Peck in How to Kill A Mockingbird. Strength is sometimes not losing your cool. Sadly Dr Cliff Huxtable was a great father but Bill Cosby has ruined all that. Those are the immediate ones that come to mind.
