Ghost Ship

A derivative horror movie that never quite reaches the greatness of its startling opening, Ghost Ship still has some good moments. Overall it’s a rather routine affair that isn’t exactly going to go down as a horror classic.

The film begins with a salvage crew retrieving a substantial amount of money following another successful operation. The crew consists of much experienced Captain Sean Murphy ( Gabriel Byrne) , tough talking Epps( Julianna Margulies), second in command Greer(Isaiah Washington) , pair of jokers Dodge and Munder( Ron Eldard and Karl Urban). This is rounded out by mechanic Santos( Alex Dimitriades) . After their latest success, a man by the name of Jack Ferriman( Desmond Harrington)inquires about their skills and wants them to help him with something. Being a guy who works with the weather department, Jack has seen a ship floating and seemingly abandoned in Bering Sea . As it’s in an area that’s classed as international waters, whoever finds something valuable there owns it. This intrigues the crew, though they don’t realise that this trip will be something very chilling for everyone involved. Using their salvage tugboat, the group that’s headed by Sean and joined by the mysterious Jack, head into the Bering Sea on what they think is just going to be another standard operation that they’ve carried out time and time again . Soon enough after sailing through stormy and extremely treacherous conditions, they come across the Antonio Graza, a large Italian liner that was declared missing in 1962 and hasn’t been seen since. Once boarding the creepy ship that catered once to the rich and powerful of the world, all manner of strange and supernatural events happen. Epps swears that she sees a little girl who swiftly vanishes following a near fatal fall through unsafe flooring by Munder, dead bodies are found in a flooded compartment and doors seem to lock by themselves. Discovering a multitude of boxes filled with gold bars, the team think they’ve got it made, but a malevolent force has other ideas. Tragedy strikes when they return to the tugboat, resulting in a fatality and the vessel being severely damaged when an invisible, mysterious force causes most of it to blow up . With the tugboat now out of action, the group must go back on the in hopes of getting it started again. The ghostly atmosphere and events from the past is not going to make it easy for any of those remaining as a haunting begins to occur with gruesome intent on its mind.

Steve Beck as director manages some moments of tension and scares but parson the pun, is all at sea when it comes to the nitty gritty of events. As a result, Ghost Ship never rises above being merely watchable. Now the main area to praise is the opening sequence which also sadly provides the big highlight for Ghost Ship. We begin back with misleading titles that look romantic and sweeping in the grand Old Hollywood tradition . Drinks are flowing and the party is in motion, just before carnage strikes. A thin wire cord is tightened by an unseen person then set free across the dance floor. It manages to leave all the passengers bisected in immensely graphic fashion because of how taut and quick it is. The only one spared is a terrified and lonely little girl named Katie(Emily Browning) , who because of her petite stature avoided being brutally butchered. The scene is pretty horrifying and the use of practical effects and camerawork truly makes it one that stays with you. It’s such a shame that after such a promising opening and hints of greatness, Ghost Ship retreats down the seen it all before route. Still some of the ambience works on the ship, especially from a visual standpoint. Unfortunately mostly everything ends up hamstrung by stupid decisions from characters and some questionable moments that really make it seem very amateurish. Take for instance when we learn a bit more about the ship; this is told from the perspective of Katie, who initially survived and is now something of a haunted presence. What should be intense sequences of dread and startling revelation are drowned out by a modern cross between rock and some kind of ambient dance that just does not fit at all. It baffles me as to why the people behind the film decided to go down this avenue, also peppering events with no real sense of logic to glean.

The cast for the most part are pretty decent in what is a misstep of a movie. Gabriel Byrne bristles with intensity and a sense of leadership, complimented well by his authoritative voice and internal struggle that threatens to burst out. The big standout of Ghost Ship is Julianna Margulies, who brings a tough attitude and feeling of grounded emotion to the part. Margulies makes Epps the most resourceful character as well as the one who is explored the most throughout. It helps that she’s the most rational person as well, making it easy for her to stand out even when at the mercy of unfocused material. Desmond Harrington has a certain enigmatic quality that makes you wonder if his character is letting more on than he is. Unfortunately, the rest of the cast predominately isn’t that great. Isaiah Washington is pretty ineffective as the second in command who seems to spout various parts of exposition and attempts at knowing, while falling foul of the cliches inherent in the genre. Ron Eldard and Karl Urban are left with thankless roles as the alleged comic relief with the same also going for Alex Dimitriades. Thankfully a young Emily Browning is rather impactful as the young guide through the ship; her haunted visage and habit of appearing then vanishing greatly benefitting a threadbare story.

So with a cracking opening and decent cast, Ghost Ship has two things in its arsenal. Sadly, there’s little else to really get excited about here. Anyone who watches will see what I mean.

Xena: Warrior Princess Season 2

‘Following on from the successful first season, Season 2 of Xena: Warrior Princess expands on the building blocks created and crafts more mythology and eventfulness for us all to enjoy. It’s safe to say that Season 2 is full of quality and more opening up of narrative

Xena(Lucy Lawless) continues journeying through Ancient Greece with loyal best friend Gabrielle(Renée O’Connor). She is still on her quest for redemption for the bloody actions she caused and the suffering she inflicted on others. On her journey this time, the past is opened up once more as we learn about Xena’s past and why she did what she did. We see that she gave birth to a son named Solan, who she gave to the centaurs to raise and the difficulty she has to live with in letting her child go. Joxer(Ted Raimi), the wannabe warrior is back and journeys with the duo with his own mix of bumbling misfortune and complete lack of understanding that he isn’t skilled at all in combat. Callisto( Hudson Leick) returns to wreck vengeance on Xena and undergoes a number of transformations while destroying all she can around her. Many more enemies and familiar faces return, along with some newer ones. Let’s just say it’s eventful for Xena and company in their testing travels.

One of the biggest things to discuss with Season 2 is how everything seems a little more crisp and you can see that the budget has been upped and that every bit of money is on screen to relish. Some effects have lost a bit of edge, but the vast majority handsomely hold up. But most importantly is something that happened behind the scenes that had the greatest impact on Xena. Lucy Lawless, while filming a skit for the Jay Leno Show, fell from a horse and fractured her pelvis. With the second season in production, the producers and writers had to think of a way to accommodate the main star. They settled on a body swap between Xena and Callisto, which worked surprisingly well. Also there are episodes where Xena is incapacitated. It all could have been a jumble, but thankfully it is quite seamlessly done and the improvisation and quick thinking on the producer’s part is ace. Watching Lucy Lawless and Hudson Leick play versions of the other as is the return of Kevin Smith as the smooth Ares.

My further discussions of main standout  episodes is next and there are a good few to discuss. The opener entitled ‘Orphan of War’ delves into Xena’s internal scars as we witness her protecting the son she gave up years before, but doesn’t tell him that she is his mother for fear of something bad befalling him. It is an episode that really shows the woman underneath the warrior and how she is human after all, when not being the fierce fighter we all know her as. A fun episode and one of the best that blends both a creepiness and campiness are ‘Girl’s Just Wanna Have Fun’. In it, Xena, Gabrielle and Joxer search for missing girls who have been kidnapped by Bacchae; bloodthirsty followers of the God Bacchus. They bite the necks of victims and seductively lure them to the catacombs of their master, where the victim must drink his blood to become an irreversible Bacchae. Gabrielle is pulled into this and is turned into a temporary Bacchae, which results in her biting Xena( pushing the subtext of them being romantically linked in a very suggestive way). It’s a very intriguing and atmospheric episode with a slinky techno score and a highly kinetic visual style. This involves frantic point of view shots, fast motion followed by slow motion and multitudes of overlapping images. It all culminates in a darkly sexy and tongue in cheek episode to really sink your teeth into.

‘Return of Callisto’ is another highlight as it brings back a fine nemesis. She kills the man who Gabrielle marries, who she could have been happy with. If anything, Callisto does us a favour as  it allows us to see that Gabrielle when pushed could have a darker side to her than expected. Although she comes to her senses, it sets up that maybe Gabrielle could be swayed to evil just as Xena is tempted often. Added to this is a brutal chariot race and Callisto seemingly dying by being pulled under by quicksand. Obviously, she isn’t dead and comes back even more vengeful later, setting the stage for much drama. A very meta episode appears in ‘The Xena Scrolls’, which has 1940’s descendants of the main characters searching for the fabled title artefact.  It’s hugely entertaining as it has fun the mythology of the show and has the actors portraying varying personas. It’s like an Indiana Jones adventure twinned with cheeky humour for extra, knowing measure.

Of special mention is ‘Destiny’, which stands as one of my favourite episodes so far. In it, Xena’s life hangs in the balance after being injured in battle. As she hovers precariously between life and death, she is reminded of her past and we finally get some answers on what made her who she was. We’ve heard parts about what lead her to be the destroyer of nations, but now we get the full picture. After her home village was butchered by a ruthless warlord, Xena took to fighting. But even though it started good, she grew evil from all the power she had. After becoming a feared warrior, she entered into a relationship with the brash Julius Caesar(a sneering Karl Urban). He accommodated Xena and their collective desires for power grew. But crafty Caesar betrayed and had her crucified, her legs broken and left to die of malnutrition. Luckily Xena was saved and learned her trademark sleeper hold from a woman who sacrificed her life to save the warrior. She continued to be evil until her renouncing into the pillar of good she attempts to be in the present. It’s one excellent episode that has everything you want in Xena; fun, darkness and revealing adventure. Plus it’s fantastic to finally grasp more about Xena herself and what lead her to this moment. 

The follow-up in ‘The Quest’ is further goodness featuring Xena’s spirit attempting to get back to the mortal world as it isn’t her time to go. Comedy and drama ensue as she takes control of both Gabrielle and returning Autolycus(returning favourite Bruce Campbell) in order to reclaim her body and stop the power crazed sadism of new Amazon Queen Velasca(a nasty and sexy Melinda Clarke). Subtext here is stronger and the kiss between the girls in ‘The Quest’ is a leading example, along with the aforementioned Bacchae episode. The kiss is in a sort of dreamscape so whether it counts is up for debate, but it’s certainly memorable in how it continues to tease the audience. On the goofy side of things we have ‘A Day in the Life’ which takes the form of an amusing reconstruction of what a day for Xena and Gabrielle consists of. The humour wisely makes fun of some of the show’s staples, like men always falling for Xena upon first meeting her and the banter between both girls. It’s very jaunty and effortlessly engaging in laughing at itself and I loved what it did. Darkness abounds in ‘The Price’ which is unusually stark and ferocious as Xena comes to the aid of a depleted army fighting The Horde. The trouble is Xena gets back in touch with her more disturbing impulses that she has repressed and it spills over into the present. Whenever Xena gets tempted back to the side of evil, it’s always fascinating to watch as she could easily sway back into it or return to good. The main crux of the show is Xena attempting to right her wrongs but also the fact that some darkness may still lie in her soul. All it takes is something to stir it, even though it’s been dormant for a long time. 

One can witness things going up for Xena and it becoming the cult show we all know. The producers really went for it on the action and expanding on story, which paid off handsomely. This accounts for the long run of high quality episodes in here, as you’ll see in my rankings. There’s a bit more cohesion here and you generally feel that the Xena hit its stride here. Not that the first season wasn’t a success( it was a resounding one), but Season 2 is the show at its best in terms of what it gets from the past and its elaboration on the building blocks. You can sense that this was the high water mark of the show and while not every episode was a hit( some new additions like Aphrodite don’t work), it was still mightily fun.The general score is a further impressive one that gets to the heart of action and atmosphere, while being a fine way to compliment beautiful scenery. And the action set pieces are upped with fierce style, adding another sheen to a high quality season.

Lucy Lawless once more makes a steely and formidable impression as Xena. Lawless navigates the physicality of the role and the general understanding of wanting to change. She’s tough and spiky, but possesses a genuine heart and growing selflessness. Plus, she’s one hell of a kick ass heroine who continues to evolve with fun, seriousness and attitude. It’s hard to picture someone else playing the role quite as well as Lucy Lawless, who is ace as our Warrior Princess. Renée O’Connor is excellent as an ever-growing Gabrielle. She has ideas of decency that are frequently challenged in a world of war, but sticks to her guns as well as learning s lot along the way. Plus, she’s toughened up a lot but doesn’t scrimp on emotion as it’s one of her defining trademarks. Lawless and O’Connor continue to display the closeness of their friendship in excellent ways, while suggesting that there is more to their bond than meets the eye. Ted Raimi is on goofy form as the returning Joxer, whose completely deluded but strangely lovable. Joxer is a character that divides many, but I like his addition to the show. Hudson Leick rocks it again as Callisto, relishing the despicable, damaged and disturbed nature of the vengeful woman. Her scenes with Xena sizzle with anger and resentment, culminating in some exciting scenes. Kevin Smith is on charismatic, burning form as the returning Ares. He has this wicked grin and appeal to him that are hard to resist and despite the fact we know he’s mainly bad news, Kevin Smith does it in style.

A fine sophomore season with darkness, humour and always supplying action, Season 2 of Xena provides many thrills and fun as it uses the template set up and moulds it into its own creative and divergent thing.

Rounding out my marathon of the Lord of the Rings trilogy is the grand and unbeatable Return of the King. It has been great reviewing these outstanding films and I hope that the other bloggers have enjoyed it as well. Winner of a staggering 11 Oscars, including Best Picture, Peter Jackson once again creates a film of such beautiful and emotional scope. Focusing on Frodo as he reaches Mount Doom, Aragorn’s taking of kingship and earth shattering battles, Return of the King is a fantasy epic of the highest order that is certain to blow you away.

Return of the King posterFrodo continues his quest to destroy the ring with Sam and the ever changeable Gollum, whose desire for the ring is growing more dangerous by the day. Day by day, Gollum conspires to drive the two friends apart in order to gain access to the ring. Meanwhile Aragorn claims the throne of Gondor and begins to raise an army of the dead to fight against the forces of Sauron that are quickly taking control over Middle Earth. Aided by friends, the time has come for Aragorn to fight and Frodo to prosper as he nears the end of his quest. Prepare for the epic spectacle of Return of the King, it will most certainly take your breath away.

If I could describe The Return of the King in one word it would be spellbinding. From absolutely stunning locations to fierce battles and the perils of various creatures, Peter Jackson never loses out attention for a single minute. He deservedly won the Best Director Oscar for his awe-inspiring and deft direction. By the end of the film, you feel so close to these characters and feel as if you’ve been on the epic journey with them right until the end. The smart screenplay is mainly the reason for this as the film nears its end, we get to see the impact the ring has on each of the characters within the narrative. As in the other films, the score is an evocative and dramatic listen that soars with emotional dexterity. While watching the film, I really didn’t want it end as it was just so involving for me. Moments in this film will forever be indelible in my mind. Some of these are Arwen’s vision of the future that persuades her to wait for Aragorn and armies rising just before battle as Aragorn, tears in his eyes utters “For Frodo”. As he says these words you understand the loyalty and friendship that is shared and the power of it.

The ensemble cast is a richly talented who have created indelible characters. Elijah Wood continues to impress as the stout-hearted Frodo, who is nearing the end of the journey whilst overcoming many obstacles. Ian McKellen is another highlight as Gandalf, while Viggo Mortensen gives one of the strongest performances as the returned king Aragorn. Sean Astin is still impressive as the good friend Sam, who has helped bring Frodo this far with his own will and determination. The scene of Frodo and Sam comforting one another, their faces dirty, their eyes red from crying but their spirits still strong, is an undeniably moving moment in a trilogy of memorable scenes. Andy Serkis is amazing as the demented Gollum, now almost completely consumed with the power of the ring and poisoning Frodo against those closest. With the power of CGI and Serkis embodying Gollum’s wiry movements to unnatural fashion, Gollum is a memorable masterwork.

Fleshing out the other members fighting with Aragorn are the reliable John Rhys-Davies and Orlando Bloom as Gimli and Legolas. Liv Tyler is moving as Arwen, who has renounced her immortality as a means of staying with her one true love Aragorn. Miranda Otto has an expanded role as Éowyn, here showing the mental and physical strength to fight in battle. Billy Boyd and Dominic Monaghan are still as plucky as ever as Pippin and Merry. Bernard Hill is very good as the brave King Théoden, while Cate Blanchett radiates ethereal beauty and deep wisdom as the elf Galadriel. Hugo Weaving and David Wenham reappear successfully as Elrond and Faramir. John Noble provides the interesting character of Denethor, a stand in ruler who is weak-willed and snake-like. Karl Urban rounds out the cast as the knight Éomer.

Stunningly mounted, emotionally gripping and all round magical, The Return of the King is all you could ask for in a fantasy movie and more.

Now for the second entry into my Lord of the Rings marathon. Picking up where Fellowship of the Ring left off, The Two Towers is a superb continuation to this engaging trilogy that balances great characters, mythology and some of the best battle scenes ever put on film. Darker than its predecessor, Two Towers is just as good as the first and introduces us to more engaging characters who populate the lands of Middle Earth. If this doesn’t get you excited for the final concluding entry in the trilogy, I don’t know what will.

Two Towers PosterWith the Fellowship now fractured and Gandalf sacrificing himself in the mines, the various factions that remain continue travelling. In one segment, Frodo and Sam continue the perilous journey to destroy the evil ring and are joined by Gollum, the ring’s former owner whose life was tortured by his desire to the ring and the inability to resist taking it. Gollum knows the way to Mordor, but Sam distrusts him and warns Frodo about what Gollum may do. In another strand; Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas travel to Rohan which is about to come under attack from the forces of Sauron. Along the way, they encounter an old ally. A now reborn and stronger Gandalf who aids them in bringing the king of Rohan,  Théoden out from under the spell cast by Gríma Wormtongue, one of Saruman the dark wizard’s workers. And in the other segment, Merry and Pippin flee after being captured by orcs into the forest where Treebeard, an ent who listens to them and journey’s on. Busting apart the common idea that the middle film of a series is the weakest, The Two Towers contains gorgeous locations, breathtaking scope and the all round magical feeling of a fantasy quest you will never want to leave.

Peter Jackson again fashions a fantasy epic of staggering proportions with this entry. Having three separate story strands could have been a risky move, but in this case it pays off handsomely as we watch not just one journey, but three. This entry also focuses more on Aragorn as a character and his emergence as a skilled warrior who may finally have to reclaim his right to the throne in the future. As is to be expected from an epic like this, the locations are spectacularly captured in long panning shots as mountains, dales and volcanos come into view.You watch scenes like this and really understand the unparalleled power and splendour that Jackson has brought to the screen. Peter Jackson handsomely combines action with an emotionally involving hero’s journey to overcome the forces of evil whilst battling against the many foes along the way. The Battle at Helm’s Deep is in my book one of the best battle sequences recorded on film, the sheer scope and meticulous craft on display is so mesmerizing as Aragorn leads men against the orcs and other forces of darkness.

Once again, the vast ensemble cast delivers, with newer additions adding impact along the way. Elijah Wood successfully continues his role as Frodo, here showing the burden that has been put on him and how he attempts to remain resilient to the dominating force of the ring. Ian McKellen shines as the resurrected Gandalf, who is as wise and powerful as he ever was. The scene when he appears to Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas in a vast array of light is a stunning sight to behold. Sam Astin continues to impress as loyal Sam, in this film it is Sam who really anchors it and functions as the narrative’s heart as we watch his friendship tested but never loses faith in his friend. Viggo Mortensen  is given more of a fleshed out character here, this further adds to the interesting dimensions of his character of Aragorn. He is strong, hopeful and above all a brave character, embodied by Mortensen with outstanding skill.

It is Andy Serkis who makes the biggest impact in the film. His fluid and strange movements combined with amazing CGI create the character of Gollum, the one who once owned the ring that has poisoned his mind forever. Gollum is an interesting character in that sometimes you feel utter revulsion for him, whereas on the other hand he is sympathetic as you see how the powerful ring of the title has shattered his sanity. Liv Tyler continues her luminous portrayal of Arwen, Aragorn’s elf lover who has now left her immortality much to the chagrin of her father. There is a beautiful scene in which Elrond predicts a melancholy for her and Arwen begins to cry. Instead of giving up on her love she replies “There is still hope” in a sincere and emotion filled voice, as the tears run down her pale face. Miranda Otto is beautiful and strong as the king’s niece Éowyn, who falls for Aragorn along the way. David Wenham plays Faramir, brother of the late Boromir, whose path crosses with Frodo’s. Orlando Bloom and John Rhys-Davies are on form as Legolas and Gimli, their characters adding a certain amount of banter to the proceedings.  Billy Boyd and Dominic Monaghan are as good as before as Pippin and Merry, who evade capture by hiding in the woods. Bernard Hill is suitably imperial as Théoden, the king given his life back by Gandalf after being a zombie for Sauron. In a small but memorable role, Cate Blanchett reappears as the wise Galadriel, who predicts what may happen if the war comes into fruition. Christopher Lee is villainy personified as the fallen Saruman, now heading a war against mankind. Hugo Weaving is stately and wise as the elf lord Elrond, while Karl Urban is a success as the exiled heir and Brad Dourif a slimy presence as a force of evil.

A stunningly mounted second entry into an exciting and emotionally involving saga, The Two Towers is not to be missed by anyone.
