A biographical drama about Margaret Keane, who for years was in the shadow of her husband Walter who claimed credit for her work, Big Eyes is evocatively translated to the screen and showcases Tim Burton’s direction with a maturity, and great performances from Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz. If it’s another side of Burton you want, starting with Big Eyes is a recommended one from me.

We start in the late 1950’s, where Margaret packs up her daughter Jane and leaves her first husband. big-eyes-movie-posterShe travels and attempts to make a life in North Beach, San Francisco. But being a divorced single mother isn’t easy for Margaret, though she gets a job at a furniture company. However, art is her biggest passion in the world and the things she paints are often of children with extremely large eyes, which she tries to sell outdoors though to no avail. It is here that charming Walter Keane enters the picture, posing as a painter himself( though we’ll soon learn otherwise). Walter, with his stories and larger than life personality, sweeps Margaret off her feet and after a brief courtship the two are married. With both being art minded, they attempt to make something of their lives doing what they love. After both craft paintings that are displayed in a nightclub, someone takes interest in one of Margaret’s big eye paintings. Rather than jinx a sale, Walter lies and says that he is the artist. Making money from this Walter is thrilled, though Margaret is dismayed at him being so covert. Ultimately, as Margaret is so vulnerable and fragile, Walter uses this to manipulate her into corroborating his scheme and keeping her silent as he passes off her work as his own. christoph-waltz-big-eyesThis traps Margaret in a big lie that she doesn’t know how to escape from(mainly because she has helped perpetuate it under duress), and for a while she goes along with it, continuing to paint what people don’t know is her work. But as the paintings get more noticed and Walter more greedy, she realises that she can no longer live this sham any more and with burning and emerging toughness, she takes action to reclaim her rightful ownership in a court battle.

Tim Burton is behind the camera in the director’s chair and he does something different here. Over his last few films, I felt that Burton was somehow becoming a bit rote and not at his usual best, due to growing use of CGI and a lack of attention to story. big-eyes-movie-margaret-and-walterBut with Big Eyes, Burton discovers his footing again by toning down his usual macabre sentiments in favour of a deeper and revealing style. Burton doesn’t completely jettison his usual kookiness, as can be attested to a few peculiar sequences where Margaret sees other people with eyes similar to her work, he just reins in his creepy visuals a bit more and crafts a very intimate and personal story that stands out. I definitely enjoyed this more traditional approach from Tim Burton and peppered with a little sprinkling of his unusual magic that don’t overpower the story, Big Eyes excels at being a change of pace in the most effective way.  You can see that Burton has a big respect for the artistic mind by the way he presents Margaret’s emotional attachments to her work, that sadly were relegated to the background by the conniving cons of her husband. As dark as the story is when you look at it closely, there is a wealth of humour thrown in that makes fun of opinions critics have on art and the overall value of it, specifically in regards to monetary worth, which it seems the slimy Walter was consumed with. When the battle of wills omen escape and it leads to court, fun can be head in sequences that prove the truth can indeed be stranger than fiction. Now I wouldn’t say Big Eyes is a perfect movie, it does have a few little flaws. During various moments, the story did find itself losing its way and getting a little repetitive. And a bit more oomph in the middle may have been beneficial, though it isn’t something that does harm to an intriguing piece. But I found myself invested watching this film for the story it provided and an insight into the mind of an artist, while covering themes of personal connection to ones work and female oppression. The flaws I mentioned which in honesty where little ones, thankfully don’t spoil the overall product which is a definite improvement on Burton’s recent output because it tries something you wouldn’t expect from him. The visuals are kept to being bright and ever so slightly mocking as the real turmoil of Margaret was largely hidden by the outward appearance of everything being serene. And Danny Elfman provides a brimming, urgent score, perfectly in touch with Margaret’s awakening.

Amy Adams gorgeously and subtly plays Margaret Keane as a shy and meek woman, who slowly burns with resentment at her circumstances, knowing that some of it falls to her. amy-adams-margaret-keaneRight from the start, Adams makes you relate and sympathise with this woman whose good nature was taken advantage of until she eventually decided enough was enough and she wanted her story to be known. She starts out birdlike and fragile and then little by little through nuance, Adams invests the part with a burgeoning voice that won’t be silenced anymore or swept under the carpet. It is an exquisite and moving performance that doesn’t need big theatrics to be effective; instead the quiet and graceful approach from Amy Adams works beautifully in imbuing the part of this artist with a passion and inner strength that eventually percolates through. At the other end of the spectrum is Christoph Waltz. His portrayal of the ruthless Walter is one that features loud and bold brush strokes, which Waltz obviously has customary fun with. I’ve read other reviews that say that he goes way over the top in his work and that it is a detriment to Big Eyes. I wouldn’t go that far because I think the part needs an exuberance that Waltz can provide as evidenced by his other work in movies. The part of Walter is this big talking, savvy man with hardly any subtlety, much like the ringmaster of the circus. And I must say, Waltz has that energy and more, which I think balances well with the gentle work of Amy Adams. Danny Huston as the man narrating the film, is appropriately barbed and cynical, which seems ideal as he is portraying a gossip columnist. The great Terence Stamp infuses his small appearance as a scathing critic with a biting sensibility, while Jason Schwartzman makes for laughs as a snooty artist. It is only Krysten Ritter who doesn’t resonate, as she is given scant to do and can’t bring whatever life there was to the part of Margaret’s friend.

A down to Earth change of pace from Tim Burton, Big Eyes proves to be a memorable version of a true life story, that has a core of emotion and respect regarding art and two excellent performances from the leads.

An action thriller that manages to for the most part distinguish itself from other films of a similar nature, The Kingdom is intense and breakneck stuff that plays out against the backdrop of uneasy tensions between the U.S. And Saudi Arabia.

Inside an American oil compound in Riyadh, terrorist kill dozens of people through violence and bombs, a second incident later occurs not long after which claims the life of a FBI agent. The Kingdom PosterThe incident is brought to the attention of the FBI deployment team headed by Ronald Fleury. Although the government is skeptical about sending a team out to Riyadh to investigate, the driven Fleury manages a way to make this possible and he is given five days to find the people behind the devastation. Joining him are bomb expert Grant Sykes, forensic examiner Janet Mayes and analyst Adam Leavitt. They are greeted by Colonel Al-Ghazi, who is to provide security for them while there. He ultimately becomes an ally who despite having his hands tied by the complexities of politics, helps them out in tracking down who instigated the act of terror. The team comes up against cultural differences and attitudes that hinder them as they continue to investigate and the situation gets more uneasy. But as the team delves deeper, it becomes apparent that they could well be the next targets of attack.

The direction from Peter Berg brings with it tension and explosive pace as chaos unfolds and the team find themselves in grave danger. He also knows when to slow it down and focus on the investigation and characters, which is rare in a film with so much action. Al Ghazi and FleuryTo be honest, going into The Kingdom I just expected another action movie of clichés and done before plots dumbed down for the audience. So I was pleasantly surprised by the fact that a lot of thought had gone into the film that would make it intriguing and realistic. It isn’t without flaws as the middle part of the movie lags before the exhilarating last half, but The Kingdom generally makes it worth your while. The marvellous title sequence of spliced news footage showing the relationships between the US and Saudi Arabia is an excellent way to open the film and bring forth the main conflict that arises throughout The Kingdom. Some may say that the politics displayed in the film are simplified, and to a certain extent that is true, but the film manages to bring some of them forward. On the action front, The Kingdom certainly delivers due to the visual style and camerawork. Through rapid cuts and jumping camerawork, we get a sense of the real danger that the team face as they attempt to find the perpetrator. Ronald FleuryThe last third of The Kingdom is unbearably tense as the team come head on with the people behind the massacre and chaos and gunfire reign. The score by Danny Elfman excellently blends an electronic pulse and Middle Eastern drums to signify the tension between the countries and the intensity of the mission.

Jamie Foxx is slick, smart yet motivated by his heart as Ronald Fleury, the head of the team. He is no slouch when it comes to the action either and really shows his physical presence. Chris Cooper brings comic relief to the film, as the wise cracking sarcastic bomb expert. The Kingdom Janet MayesJennifer Garner is very good as Janet, the only girl on the team who can handle herself in her job and in combat. Garner manages to make her character grounded and unflappable, which comes in very handy with the events she must face. Jason Bateman plays well off Chris Cooper at the joking thing but also exudes the want not to be in this situation. But the real standout for me is Ashraf Barhom. Portraying  Al-Ghazi, the colonel assisting the team, he embodies depth, care and the desire to hold balance in a time of chaos. Barhom is the one who provides The Kingdom with a surprising amount of depth. Ali Suliman in the role of the second in command to Al-Ghazi is quiet yet suitably intense. Unfortunately, Jeremy Piven as an opportunistic embassy worker and Danny Huston as the U.S. Attorney General are totally wasted.

Lightening paced, surprisingly deep at times but also very thrilling, The Kingdom manages to stand out from the crowd of action movie out there.

Brutal, blood-soaked but also thought-provoking and strangely poetic, The Proposition is an Australian western that delves deep into the minds of its characters. Scripted by Nick Cave, of the Bad Seeds fame, the film is visually exemplary and excellently performed. If it’s a western that focuses on the characters and the repercussions of their actions, then The Proposition is the film for you.

In 1880’s Australia, English lawman Captain Stanley captures two brothers, Charlie and Mikey, of a famous band of outlaws after a brutal shootout. They are accused of the heinous murder of a colonial family, including the woman of the house. Stanley, who Arthur and Charlie Burnshas his own version of justice, gives Charlie the title proposition; either he hunts down and kills his psychotic older brother Arthur or his feeble-minded younger brother Mikey will hang in the number of weeks that precede Christmas. The laconic Charlie goes in search of his brother in the arid Australian outback whilst deliberating what he will do. Meanwhile Stanley’s superior Eden Fletcher has decided to make an example of the young prisoner, which disturbs Stanley as he tries to wrestle with his conscience. The eponymous proposition will have consequences for every character involved as the film moves towards a shocking climax.

Nick Cave, best known for brooding songs about death, violent, bloody revenge and choice, fashions many of these themes into his poetic screenplay. It is as if he had written a song and extended it into celluloid. Unlike some westerns that feature constant shoot-outs, The Proposition, although violent and bloody throughout, focuses more on the choices and actions of theRay Winstone as Captain Stanley characters to move the story along. This is more effective as it paints a bleak and haunting portrait of a lawless time in which there are no easily identifiable bad guys. Cave also provides an atmospheric music score that compliments the long-lasting consequences of fatal decisions and gives Charlie’s journey to track down Arthur an almost mystical edge. Cinematography is a key component, showing both the savage and unforgiving state of the town and the arid beauty of the outback, sometimes at the same time. A fine cast of actors flesh out Cave’s challenging characters, with Guy Pearce, Ray Winstone and Emily Watson making the biggest impacts. As Charlie, Pearce exudes weariness at his difficult proposition, although he doesn’t share much love for his older brother, he still struggles to decide whether to kill him or save his other sibling in a strange Cain and Abel way. As Stanley, the lawman who is by turns violent and kind, Ray Winstone reveals new-found depths as an actor that make Emily Watson as Marthahis character interesting to watch. As one of the few women in the picture, Emily Watson is reliable as ever as Stanley’s wife Martha, who is delicate and haunted by the murder of her friend. It is she who brings out the kinder side to Stanley but also shocked and repulsed by the lawlessness surrounding her. Watson delivers a powerful monologue that speaks of her dreams of her dead friend that is so poignant and poetic, mainly because of her faultless phrasing and delivery. In supporting roles, Danny Huston as the psychopathic Arthur and John Hurt as a drunken bounty hunter, both imbue their characters with unstable menace that is very disquieting.

As I mentioned earlier, the film is quite violent in parts, especially when Mikey is brutally lashed,  so be warned if you are squeamish. But if you can handle it you shouldn’t miss this revenge riddled western that paints a brutal picture of crime and lawlessness and is scripted and acted to a high standard.
