You all know the kinds of directors I mean. The ones whose output is regularly under a critical eye of reviewers and public and provoke wildly different reactions with each person. But which directors who fit into this category are your favourites? Lately, the output of Yorgos Lanthimos has really captured my attention. But who is it for you?
For me it’s definitely Zack Snyder, I have loved every movie he has put out to date (Watchmen being a personal favourite) His fatalistic, near apocalyptic style suit my preferences in cinematic style. He’s an underrated visual magician for sure!

He’s definitely got a cool style. Man, I want to see Watchmen again now.

Watchmen is amazing isn’t it? I watch it religiously once a month… no joke! 🙂

It’s been so long since my last viewing.

Love Watchmen so I’ll vote for him too. It has an amazing soundtrack as well as being visually stunning.

Snyder is sure getting a lot of good notices, it seems.

He’s not my favorite but I know his works get a varied response. M. Night Shyamalan.
I’m excited to watch Glass and I very much liked the Sixth sense and Split. I can’t remember if I liked the village or not, and the Happening was really bad. 😀

The Sixth Sense was an excellent movie it must be said, I also liked Signs.

Unbreakable was superb. Shame it never got as much acclaim. Marketing wasn’t great which didn’t help.

Another vote for Snyder. He’s a popular guy tonight.

That’s easy. Lars von Trier, Gaspar Noe, and Leos Carax. Controversial filmmakers who gives no fucks about whether people like their films or not. They’re masters of their craft. I love them for pissing people off and with great films to back it up.

I’m not that aware of Leos Carax. What has he directed?

Definitely Shyamalan for me. He’s done a couple of movies I haven’t really loved but I will blindly watch anything he directs!

I suppose Lars Von Trier would have to top a lot of lists, and I like many of his films. I would vote for Michael Haneke, Ken Russell, and Terrence Malick as a top three. It might also be worth mentioning the German film-makers Wim Wenders, Rainer Fassbinder, and Werner Herzog. They all tend to be ‘love or hate’ directors. But they made some amazing films.
Cheers, Pete.

Von Trier is the definition of divisive. Ken Russell had one crazy visual style and way of shooting.

Quentin Tarantino. Lars Von Trier. Spike Lee.

He’s a prolific Japanese auteur, a bit like Takashi Miike in that a lot of his films are the stuff most people wouldn’t even dream of filming, but with a humanistic vein running through his dark and disturbing stories. He’s mellowed a little recently but his satirical provocative bite is still present.
Just a sample of his output as reviewed on my site:

Yorgos Lanthimos. I thought The Lobster was hysterical and really liked The Favorite. I just “get” his sense of humor.

Glad to see someone else say Lanthimos. He definitely has a mastery of dark humour and sinister overtones.

Michael Haneke, David O Russell, Nicolas Winding Refn. All well loved directors, but they get a lot of hate at the same time!

Haneke is definitely a polarising figure in cinema.

I love/hate M. Night. The village really disappointed me, but I really liked Lady in the Water

He’s had a mixed run of movies but can be extremely good when he puts his mind to it.

Wed Anderson, who I have a love/hate relationship… and Baz Luhrman who I just love. I even loved The Great Gatsby. I don’t care what anyone says!

Anderson definitely has a very unique world that he creates. And Baz Luhrman is one inspired, visual film maker.
