No not the superhero movie franchise, but the classic 60’s spy show that I’ve finally got around to seeing some of. This is in large part due to the television airing episodes again. I remember my Grandfather being very fond of the show and decided to view it. Well I love watching the suave John Steed, him of the bowler hat and umbrella, and his succession of female sidekicks battle nefarious villains. But what do you think?
The classic Avengers TV sereis is brilliant, its a big favourite of mine as well. Its often repeated on TV. Sure you’ll enjoy watching all the episodes 🙂

I haven’t seen the show but I am familiar with it. Notably the character of Emma Peel played wonderfully by Dame Diana Rigg and those skin-tight clothes who could kick really high. I first heard of them through an episode of Married… with Children as Al Bundy and Jefferson were both obsessed with Emma Peel and wanted the entire series as Al kept telling Bud about the fact that Emma Peel could kick really high.

Emma Peel is a great character. Smart, classy and a dab hand in a tight jam, she’s a tough cookie who fights with some serious flair.

I watched it right from the beginning, when the female sidekick, Cathy Gale, was played by Honour Blackman. You should research back further, and watch some of those. The plots got even sillier the longer it went on, but I had a soft spot for Joanna Lumley, when she starred as Purdey, in the later ‘New Avengers’.
Cheers, Pete.

I’ve seen a few of the Cathy Gale episodes and she really kicks ass. I’ve seen The New Avengers too and liked Purdey a lot.

I saw a few episodes when I was young. Enjoyed it, but never got round to seeing more — though I managed to pick up the complete series DVD a few years ago for a bargain, but I’ve not got round to it yet!
Have you seen the film version with Ralph Fiennes, Uma Thurman and Sean Connery? I saw it at the cinema when it came out — one of the few, I think, because it went down very badly. I enjoyed it back then, but, again, I was young, so…

Brilliant series. I love how quirky and unique it is. The theme tune and title sequences are unforgettable. Steed is like the coolest guy ever, and I love how his partners are all strong and independent women. Cathy Gale is badass, but Emma Peel is the best. The chemistry between Patrick Macnee and Diana Rigg is incredible.

Quirky and outlandish are how I’d describe it. All the ladies are strong and capable in the best possible way. What do you think of The New Avengers?

I thought The New Avengers was good, but not nearly as good as the original.

I was fond of it but agree that it was hard to live up to the original.

We caught this latest airing also. I remember from the time – some of it. Steed used to drive me up the wall with his ‘Englishness’ ( I’ve learnt to shrug it off).
The stories got crazier, which was good. It couldn’t have worked without the crazy element.

Love the Avengers! Diana Rigg was incredible and McNee could be quite suave when needed. Not quite as fond of Linda Thorson or Honor Blackman, but they were good too. As for The New Avengers, it was not quite the same, though it was still not all that bad.

Great show. Definitely worth spending time getting to know it. Ignore the movie from the late 90’s, though.
