As many people will know, Buffy the Vampire Slayer celebrated its 20th anniversary on the 10th of March. I was planning on doing a post, but the house move got in the way. Never fear, as I’ve decided to still do a post about the greatness of the show, just in belated yet graceful fashion. I love Buffy so much, it has to rank as one of my favourite shows ever. Watching as the eponymous warrior fought the powers of darkness while grappling with her personal life was entertaining television of the highest. As I could about the show for hours, I thought it better to condense my feelings into something more concise. So without further ado, here are the five reasons that Buffy the Vampire Slayer rocks like no other.
It knew how to scare you:
As a show that delved into the supernatural, it was only right that many things that our sarcastic heroine would battle would be creepy. And when I say spooky, I’m talking nightmare inducing at times. The villains and forces of darkness where never dull and had just the right amount of fright to creep you out.
It can make you laugh:
The sarcastic and often darkly humorous aspects of the show where always in high supply. In a show that was dark, laughs were generated frequently due to the comic timing of characters and the often outrageous things they would have to battle.
And just as quickly break your heart:
The amount of times I felt emotional watching Buffy are too many to count. It really knew how to get you emotional because of how well written it was. Tragedy and death formed large parts of the show, yet where always searing and ready for the tears to fall.
It’s highly innovative:
From the musical episode ‘Once More, With Feeling’ to the creepy and largely silent episode ‘Hush’, Buffy was always a show that was willing to take creative risks and challenges. And a lot of them largely paid off, which resulted in the show being a force to be reckoned with.
And of course the amazing title character:
Smart, sassy and kick ass to a fault, Buffy Summers has to be one of the strongest women warriors to hit television screens. Played to perfection by Sarah Michelle Gellar, Buffy is a girl you can gravitate towards on a lot of levels. In the beginning, she just wants to be a normal teenager though her destiny is what stops that. Over the course of the show, she grew into a woman accepting her destiny and learning how to embrace it. In short, Buffy Summers is a feisty and relatable heroine of steel and heart.
There are many other things I could list, but I’m trying to be concise as I know I’ll ramble given half the chance. All I have left to say is that Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a show that will never get old.

It a makes me happy to see this reborn again..well in post from at least. I like it for the same reasons you do, and wow I remember the Hush episode so clearly even though it’s been awhile since I last watched it. They are one of the creepiest monsters I came across in a tv series. The silent but deadly type that glide or float across you and take for voice is enough to give you nightmares in the most effective thrilling way possible. And being a geek of sorts, one has to have the soundtrack from the opening theme of course.☺ A lovely post to remember Joss Whedon at his finest creation.

Buffy will never lose its greatness for me, it’s just too amazing to forget. Hush is undoubtedly my favourite episode. The Gentlemen are just like something from an old horror movie brought to vivid life. I still can remember being so scared when I first saw them.

She got skinner as the show went on and certain assets dwindled in their buoyancy but if that made the actress healthier and happier then more power to her. If it was due to Hollywood’s obsession with skinniness I can’t help but feel a loss Pete.

BREASTS! Cruel Intentions Poster sized breasts. Glorious and intoxicating breasts that say “Want to buy a drink at the bar? Better make it a double little man!”. For the love of God why do they get rid of the breasts just for health and inner contentment and yoga classes. Awww the humanity!……..Ahem. Of course nothing, Sarah Michelle Gellar is a beautiful actress and can do whatever the hell she wants with her body and life. Including those beautiful supple awe inspiring breasts.

Buffy is one of my favourite TV shows, with its spin-off Angel being my personal favourite.
It’s a show that has definitely stood the test of time and one of the greatest things to ever grace the world of television.
It’s a shame that like all other Joss Whedon shows the series (and Angel) got canceled.
Still a true classic. Great post!

You really should. It’s a fantastic spin-off and I actually prefer it to Buffy personally.
Some really great character writing and a lot of unexpected things you wouldn’t expect.
If you’re a fan of Buffy and are craving more, it’s got that same charm. It even ties in with Buffy in several episodes with Buffy herself making a few guest appearances.

Willow Season I just wanted to give her a big hug and say you’re awesome. Loved her relationship with Oz. The golden years were Season 1 to 3 when I was a uni student. In particular Season 2 and 3 are some of my favourite television ever and have a particular power because they were my favourite TV when I was 18. However Hush, Restless, Once More with Feeling come later and were awesome. Who was your favourite character? Giles for me and so therefore Passions might be favourite episode.

Ah Buffy! All time favourite for me. Have the whole lot on DVD too. Also downloaded every track from all the series and made my own albums from them 🙂 Angel was a poor substitute series really and I only managed 2 episodes, but maybe that was because I was bereft that Buffy had finished. 🙂 I had a crush on Spike, never keen on Angel so that too lol.

“Welcome to the Hellmouth”
“Hush”
“Once More With Feeling”
I’m told that “The Body” is also worth watching. Somehow I can’t quite get into this show, because of its production quality, although I suspect that might be intended somehow. But even I know that Sarah Michelle Geller is the Queen.

Buffy was such an amazing show to watch. It was so different from anything else at the time and the vampires were still mostly scary. I loved Darla. She was fantastic in season 1 (you know, until she got staked – though that didn’t stop her coming back on Angel later).

I feel bad I missed this first time around. Loved this show big time. Agree with everything you said. The episode where there’s an alternate universe where they think Buffy is insane is just remarkable. The one with Buffy’s mum. The one where they become the person from their costume. When Buffy can hear other people’s thoughts. The musical one. And Hush. And many more.

Buffy was a huge part of my inspiration to become a writer, and continues to be a huge part of my life. It’s such an incredible show. Whenever I need a good cry I watch a very particular scene in between Willow and Xander near the end of “Grave”. I don’t even have to watch the whole episode, just that scene, never fails to make me cry.
I’m rewatching at the moment with my boyfriend, who has never seen it before, and somehow manages to remain completely unspoiled by the internet. It’s so great to see his reactions as someone who’s never seen it before.
