I enjoyed the response on my last horror questionnaire, so I went forth and did another one for all of you out there. I love hearing your opinions on movies, as you promote good discussion and debate. You guys rock! Anyhow, back to the horror questions which I know will all give you something to talk about.
- If you were to direct a horror movie, what sub-genre would it be part of?
- If you could erase one horror flick from your mind, what would it be?
- Do you have a problem with nudity or sex in horror films?
- Do you have a favourite music score from a horror film?
- What are the best settings for a horror film?
- Are there any guys or girls that you have an attraction to in any films in the horror genre?
- Is there any specific scary film you watch every Halloween?
- If you were to write or direct a horror, what would you change or put in to refresh the genre?
- Which scary film gave you the most nightmares?
- Would you count horror as one of your favourite movie genres?

Got in first for a change…
1) I would like to update the old Hammer-style lesbo-vampire horror and make it bang up to date.
2) Probably ‘Blair Witch’. The ending was really unsettling.
3) No.
4) No. I don’t really remember any horror scores that well.
5) I like modern urban. Feels real.
6) Madeline Smith was so hot in the old hammer films.
7) No. I hate Halloween!
8) Something unseen, perhaps imaginary; no monsters, slashers, or returning villains. That doesn’t really refresh the genre, I know.
9) No nightmares, but ‘Blair Witch’ had some real impact.
10) Not really. I prefer World Cinema, Historical, and Drama.
Cheers, Pete.

Hey man, loving the solid Halloween content! Anyway, I’m still a sucka for a questionnaire…
1. Probably some kind of self-aware B-movie slasher.
2. Kill Zombie! A Dutch-language zombie film with censored gore and awful humour… kill me…
3. I’m a 15-year old boy, I actively search for it.
4. The Exorcist
5. The scariest for me is some kind of hospital/asylum but you can’t beat the classic “Cabin in the woods” type-deal.
6. The stripper with a machine gun for a leg in Planet Terror… DON’T JUDGE ME.
7. I tend to revolve around Alien, Ghostbusters and Beetlejuice but this year I think I’m gonna go for Texas Chainsaw (the classic, of course)
8. I’d go for some sort of Fury Road-style direction and colour scheme.
9. A Nightmare On Elm Street when I was younger, still a quality film, though.
10. It’s definitely up there, has risen the past few years as well.

I love your questionnaires! Here’s my answers:
If you were to direct a horror movie, what sub-genre would it be part of?
Psychological thriller.. but am I clever enough to come up with and direct a psychologically intricate narrative? .. that’s another story
If you could erase one horror flick from your mind, what would it be?
I really want to delete some scenes from A Serbian Film from my memory.
Do you have a problem with nudity or sex in horror films?
Some slashers just show sex scenes to let you know who’s gonna die first (like the infamous scene from ‘Scream’ when our guy is explaining how horror movies work). That’s OK with me!
Do you have a favourite music score from a horror film?
There’s a lot of great, great scores in horrors. I recently watched ‘The Witch’ and was very impressed with the score. I also like the music in ‘The Descent’, and an older classic with a great score would be ‘Nightmare On Elm Street’
What are the best settings for a horror film?
Dark, wooded areas can be very creepy. Also bedrooms at night are petrifying.
Are there any guys or girls that you have an attraction to in any films in the horror genre?
I have to say I have a rather questionable crush on Hannibal Lecter. He just has charisma, okay?! Also Lt. Ripley from the ‘Alien’ movies.
Is there any specific scary film you watch every Halloween?
I don’t traditionally watch a horror at Halloween every year, but the classics like ‘Halloween’ and ‘Scream’ would be good.
If you were to write or direct a horror, what would you change or put in to refresh the genre?
I’d like to do a British horror in an everyday setting to challenge the usual horror settings, i.e. an office or workplace. And I would like to shock the audience by allowing the genre to take a sudden, drastic turn in the second or third act. Like the Japanese movie ‘Audition’, which starts as a drama/tragedy/romance, and turns into a brutal, graphic horror after like 40 minutes.
Which scary film gave you the most nightmares?
‘The Ring’ played a big part in some of my worst sleep paralysis scenarios a few years ago!
Would you count horror as one of your favourite movie genres?
Of course. The horror genre is really terrific. It’s very clever how the horror movie (if done correctly) can have such a strong effect on you physically (make you sweat, your heart beat faster etc) as well as give you a shot of adrenalin now and then.

1. I think I’d be interested in a really clever horror/comedy. Kind of on the idea of Tucker & Dale vs Evil which is hysterical without being stupid.
2. And speaking of stupid, the movie I wish I could unsee is Halloween 3: Season of the Witch. It didn’t even have Michael Myers in it!😕
3. I don’t have a huge issue with sex or nudity in a horror movie as long as it adds something to it.
4. Oh gosh. This is tough because there are many scores that I love. I’m going to cheat and list my top three. Halloween, The Exorcist, and Jaws.
5. Dark, creepy woods and abandoned houses.
6. Taye Diggs in The House On Haunted Hill and (don’t be shocked!) Matt Bomer in Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning.
7. Halloween, the Scream franchise and Lost Boys.
8. I’m not sure.

If you were to direct a horror movie, what sub-genre would it be part of?
– I’d do two. One a comedy as smart as possible. And then a really tense one, no sclock just real terror.
If you could erase one horror flick from your mind, what would it be?
– Most of them, ha. It’d make more room for better things!
Do you have a problem with nudity or sex in horror films?
– Nope. Not one bit. No way.
Do you have a favourite music score from a horror film?
– Not really. But I don’t own too many, so I’ll check others’ answers for suggestions.
What are the best settings for a horror film?
– Somewhere commonplace, easily recognizeable, making it more plausible it could happen.
Are there any guys or girls that you have an attraction to in any films in the horror genre?
– Oh, probably all of them.
Is there any specific scary film you watch every Halloween?
– Nope. But that’s not a bad idea. I’ll think on it.
If you were to write or direct a horror, what would you change or put in to refresh the genre?
Better dialogue, believable plot, even victims who don’t walk straight into their dooms.
Which scary film gave you the most nightmares?
I don’t tend to have nightmares.
Would you count horror as one of your favourite movie genres?
Nope. But they’re fun every now and then. I like to try to keep up with the popular ones, just to see what people are talking about.

1. Probably psychological horror, monster horror, or supernatural horror.
2. I really hated Rob Zombie’s, The Devil’s Rejects.
3. Eh, don’t really care . . . I like for it to have SOMETHING to do with the story.
4. Nothing specific . . . just as long as it adds to the scariness.
5. Everyday locations . . . Nothing special. Or the woods. Or the person’s mind.
6. First that comes to mind: Jensen Ackles from Supernatural.
7. Night of the Living Dead, the first one. Just watched it the other day actually.
8. Tough question. Let’s see . . . I’d want to make a movie that’s mostly just blood and guts even scarier by making it feel more real, like it could happen to you. I want the viewer to literally be scared after watching it.
9. I don’t really get nightmares. But, I did get a little scared from watching The Exorcism of Emily Rose. I kept waking up at 3am like she did. I didn’t even want the dvd in my house. Also, this movie where this person has their lips closed shut with metal and they were stuck in a room with no windows or doors. I don’t remember the name, but it kinda freaked me out.
10. Yup.

Vinnie, thanks for stopping by my site and checking out my new horror companion book: BOOBS, BLOOD & THE BEAST. You’ve got quite a few horror reviews yourself 😉 Good stuff.
This questionnaire is pretty cool. Let me dig in…
If you were to direct a horror movie, what sub-genre would it be part of?
– Psychological. The best always work their way under your skin and infest themselves within. Horror rooted in reality always scares me the most.
If you could erase one horror flick from your mind, what would it be?
– Just one? Hehehe. Although some bad horror, can be pretty ‘good’ 😉 Probably a remake like ELM STREET.
Do you have a problem with nudity or sex in horror films?
– No way… depending on the sub-genre, it’s an essential for part of the b-movie charm. That said, a lot of the best horror movies have no nudity (DAWN OF THE DEAD, NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, EXORCIST, PSYCHO, SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, TEXAS CHAINSAW…)
Do you have a favourite music score from a horror film?
– HALLOWEEN. ‘Nuff said.
What are the best settings for a horror film?
– Isolation. Seclusion. The more reliance that is placed on the individual to be safe, the scarier the story. And not only cabins in the woods 😉 The Overlook Hotel from THE SHINING and the Nostromo from ALIEN are also great examples of isolated settings.
Are there any guys or girls that you have an attraction to in any films in the horror genre?
– Nearly every Final Girl ever 😉 One of the all-time best Scream Queens (and best overly indulgent nude scenes) is Trash in RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD.
Is there any specific scary film you watch every Halloween?
– One of the way back classics (selected from a steady rotation that includes EVIL DEAD, ALIEN, SHINING, ELM STREET, HALLOWEEN, SCREAM).
If you were to write or direct a horror, what would you change or put in to refresh the genre?
– Cracking that nut is a million dollar question. To deviate from the current fixation on paranormal, I’d return to the terrifying idea of a masked killer. For me, the idea of a mad man on the loose is more frightening because it could happened; whereas paranormal requires a leap in logic.
– To switch it up, I’d make the masked killer a young woman on a college campus defending her ‘sisters’ from sexual assaults that the school system turns a blind eye to (as with the best horror, it’s an excuse to provide some contemporary social commentary).
Which scary film gave you the most nightmares?
– A movie hasn’t given my nightmares since I was a kid. Freddy Krueger worked on me, especially since he ‘existed’ in the dreamworld.
Would you count horror as one of your favourite movie genres?
– It’s a guilty pleasure that was much more enjoyable as an adolescent. The older I get, the more cliched the genre becomes. Experiencing some of the genre’s best from decades past, the current wave has a lot to live up to. Hidden gems still exist, like IT FOLLOWS, YOU’RE NEXT, and THE BABADOOK; however, horror has been on a decline ever since the 80s (with SCREAM defining the 90s and SAW unfortunately defining the 2000s). While indie successes like a lot of recent low budget hits make an initial impact, I feel like the enthusiasm quickly fades. Will ghost movies like THE CONJURING withstand the test of time?

1. Any sub-genre really. If I was starting out as an independent filmmaker, I would make either a zombie film or a slasher film, but If I was a film director working within a major studio, I would love to make a monster film (i.e. The Thing).
2. Neither.
3. Not at all.
4. Bernard Herrmann’s music score to Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho (1960), John Carpenter’s music score to his own Halloween (1978) and Ennio Morricone’s music score to John Carpenter’s The Thing (1982).
5. Any setting really.
6. Tippi Hedren’s character in Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds (1963) and Amber Heard’s character in The Ward (2010).
7. Scary or not, the following titles still rank as some of the many greatest horror films I love to watch every Halloween, but I will limit it to six titles: Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho (1960) and The Birds (1963), George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead (1968) and Dawn of the Dead (1978) and John Carpenter’s Halloween (1978) and The Thing (1982).
8. I need to come back to that question.
9. Although I already mentioned this in another post, it still is Poltergeist (1982), which was the very first horror film I saw as a child. It is one of the many greatest horror films of all-time though 🙂
10. Yes. The Horror genre is one of my many favorite genres of all-time.

Do you have a problem with nudity or sex in horror films? Not particularly, unless I’m watching it with my dad and then it’s just embarrassing ha ha.
Do you have a favourite music score from a horror film? I love In the House / In a Heartbeat from 28 Days Later. And Plasma Pool from The Fly. Nothing beats Jaws either, genuinely spine tingling. Hellraiser has a good soundtrack too, I know you reviewed those films recently!

I suppose I would say A Nightmare on Elm Street on that one.
What are the best settings for a horror film?
Abandoned places or everyday places.
Are there any guys or girls that you have an attraction to in any films in the horror genre?
I can’t say I have.
Is there any specific scary film you watch every Halloween?
No, I watch horrors every day so Halloween isn’t a special day in that regard. On Halloween it’s more horror games and all other things horror.
If you were to write or direct a horror, what would you change or put in to refresh the genre?
Out with the cliches and stupidity. In with more realistic reactions, and more mind tricks. No repetitive story and remove all the running around in skimpy outfits.
Which scary film gave you the most nightmares?
On the top of my head, Let’s Talk About Kevin, Possession of Michael King, Shutter (Korean) and Martyrs (2008)
Would you count horror as one of your favorite movie genres?
Absolutely, I barely watch anything else.

I think horror movies come under a lot of flack needlessly sometimes.

Hello, yours questions are very interesting, very thought-provoking, so here are my answers:
If you were to direct a horror movie, what sub-genre would it be part of? Psychological horror; I am a big fan of Polanski, so something along the lines of Repulsion, Rosemary’s Baby or the Tenant. The horror which is subtle, merely seen, but ever present, powerful.
If you could erase one horror flick from your mind, what would it be? I partly regret I watched the Strangers (2008). It still gives me chills, and an uncomfortable feeling.
Do you have a problem with nudity or sex in horror films? No, I actually think most of the time – these are complementary, and even necessary for some horror.
Do you have a favourite music score from a horror film? It is more of a psychological thriller rather than horror, but I would go for The Village (2004)’s soundtrack – without any doubt, one of the most powerful and eeriest soundtracks in the scary genre. I also like the opening song to Rosemary’s Baby.
What are the best settings for a horror film? Closed-off, eerie houses or apartments. I don’t like open spaces – people could escape easily there! lol
Are there any guys or girls that you have an attraction to in any films in the horror genre? No one I can think of.
Is there any specific scary film you watch every Halloween? Hitchcock’s the Birds 🙂
If you were to write or direct a horror, what would you change or put in to refresh the genre? I would introduce more subtlety to the horror genre. Something that looks ok on the outside but is very wrong inside, if you know what I mean, something similar to the Stepford Wives, maybe, but with a different plot, etc.?
Which scary film gave you the most nightmares? When I was very young it was Child’s Play and A Nightmare on Elm Street, but now I am terrified of every stranger (well sort of) since I saw the Strangers (2008). It is personally scary for me.
Would you count horror as one of your favourite movie genres? Definitely.

I love a good bit of psychological horror, like as you said Repulsion. I was terrified by The Strangers, due to the fact that something could happen like that in real life. What is it with apartments in horror movies?

1. Horror comedy. I wanna make people laugh an’ scream at the same time!
2. Jennifer’s body. No-one should see Megan Fox puke black gunk like that!
3. No. Cuz that’s the time when someone usually dies in the movie/feels the ghost feeling them up! ;-P
4. The Conjuring score was spooky
5. Forests. To be specific, really dark and spooky ones!
6. That young priest, Fr. Karras (Jason Miller) from The Exorcist was kinda cute.
7. No. But if I did, I wouldn’t stop at one! I love horror movies! =-D
8. I’d put in stuff that’d make the audience jump right outta their shoes! And the ghost in the movie would have yellow eyes, cuz that is the creepiest eye color in my opinion. I’d also hire the make-up artist from The Conjuring, cuz that witch’s face was too horrifying!
9. The Exorcist
10. Yup. It’s probably first in my list o’ fav genres!

I can see you really liked The Conjuring, just like I did. It was a very exceptional supernatural horror. And forests are ideal for the horror genre.

Yup. I’m hopin to watch the sequel sometime. I hope Annabelle the doll is the subject of Conjuring 3. I saw Annabelle the movie, but it was just too dull and unscary. So, I hope they give that doll a better movie with more scares.

1. Psychological (Someone driven crazy) Shining-esque!
2. Freddy vs Jason or Halloween Resurrection o and I hated the recent Blair witch
3. Not at all but I don’t want too much, this is not a porno
4. Halloween hands down
5. I’m gonna say a huge isolated hotel (Shining again) 😁
6. Jennifer Love-Hewitt and Sarah Michelle Gellar in I know what you did last summer
7. Halloween and the Shining
8. Make it less jump scare orientated, I like when we the audience can see something but the character in film cannot.
9. Phantom of the opera does that count?
10. Without a doubt.
Absolutely love what you’re doing with these questionnaires! Keep up the great work! It’s very entertaining ☺

I adore a slow burn horror. When you can feel that something bad will happen but you can’t quite put your finger on it.
