The questions and debate regarding nudity in film and television has been going for a very long time. It appears that everyone has an opinion on when someone strips down to their birthday suit in front of the camera. So today I thought I should do a post asking about movie and television nudity. Below are 10 questions on the subject that I’d like you all to answer in the comments as I’m very interested in reading your thoughts on this topic.

I don’t think nudity in and of itself is degrading. We are all born naked, we each see ourselves naked at some point in life. People get naked in life & if film and television mean to depict life, then that depiction (if accurate) should include nudity, right? I mean, a sex scene between two attractive Hollywood A-list stars is must-see material because the audience wants to see them naked, and becomes a letdown if they don’t get naked. We take our clothes off when we have sex in real life, don’t we? So why do people in movies and on TV do it with their clothes on. Why do they wake up wearing a full face of makeup, for that matter.

Nudity is fine just as it’s been for centuries in sculpture paintings and art! ‘The more tit and ass the better!!!’ However I don’t think there’s any justification for showing sexual intercourse in Film if only because sex is boring to watch and the viewer knows they’re both faking all those screams and cries. Remember Tipi Hedren and Sean Connery in Hitchcock’s ‘Marnie’? When they are just about to fuck Hitchcock cuts away to the picture of a steam train entering a tunnel, far more classy! Lol hope that helps.

You make a good point about art and sculpture, there is nudity to be found but it feels very natural. I can see what you’re getting at about sex in movies. Good call on Hitchcock insinuating sex, he does it numerous times in his movies. I suppose back when has was directing you couldn’t have sex in movies, everything was suggested.

I think nudity can be good in most tv programmes. Game of thrones is famous for its nudity, but I think that it is set in a time when nudity wasn’t shameful. There has to be a point to the nudity. I have written about it myself. Did Halle Berry need to go topless? If you took that scene out would it make a big impact on the film. Sharon stone used her sexuality as power over men. How could she not be naked? Historically black slaves were humiliated by their nudity. It would be historically incorrect if they were clothed. I think there is generally more female nudity than male. I saw the bigger splash recently and it was pretty even. I think it us only bad if that is the only interesting reason to watch and if it plays no part in the story. I do however think you lose some of the sexual tension that you had in the 40,s, 50’s and 60’s. There wasn’t much sex or nudity then.

Very true about Sharon Stone using her sexuality to manipulate men in Basic Instinct. She was naked in many scenes, but completely in control. Older movies I find are very good at talking about sex through innuendo and double entendres.

Yeah! I always use The phone scene on its a wonderful life as an example. The tension there is excruciating and very well done. I think the chemistry was far better in the older movies.

Yes! I think I prefer the old way. I think some stars get too well known for nudity. I think Dakota Johnson will end up doing so many nude scenes.

I’ve answered all your questions, Vinnie, so sorry if this goes on a little!
1) I think this depends on context — it can be either, depending how it’s done.
2) I guess something that’s been renowned for it recently — so at the minute, Game of Thrones.
3) I don’t know about sexist, but definitely one-sided. It’s still much, much rarer that you’ll see a guy full frontal.
4) Juno Temple. Has she ever done a part where she keeps her clothes on?! (The answer is yes, but I think not many!)
5) Not by myself. In company… depends on the company!
6) Nah.
7) Probably. It’s still seen as an odd thing to do, and can be strange and uncomfortable, so why not get a bonus for it?
8) Everyone’s got a price! Mine would probably be fairly high…
9) I think that taps into our entire society’s attitude to nudity. If it wasn’t such a big deal in life, it wouldn’t be a big deal on screen.
10) I don’t know if it’s the earliest I saw, but the earliest I can remember is Jenny Agutter in Logan’s Run, from the days when you could get away with boobs in a PG. Imagine the outcry if they allowed such a thing today!

I’m no prude, so it doesn’t bother me. Do I think it’s mostly gratuitous and largely unnecessary to tell the story, even a love story? Yep.

I am not turned off at all by nudity. I am turned off by gratuitious nudity in movies but thats what B movies are all about so they have to get viewers somehow. I am turned off by poetry that is illustrated by sexual acts, I can always pull up my porn site for that and not be harrassed by the crappy poetry that usually goes with it involving “slimey”, “juices” …so on and so on, lets us draw our on images, we all know what is involved. Thank you for the outlet.

Done in context, with a point to the plot or character, fine. Nudity just to have nudity, also fine 🙂 but it does also cheapen the film if it’s gratuitous. Some movies are built for that though, so fair play.

OK, late to this as you know. Here goes. (I haven’t read the other comments.)
1) If it relevant, I don’t really care. Trouble is, at least in films, it seems to be ‘compulsory’ rather than plot-related.
2) For me, it is usually the swimming scene in ‘Walkabout.’
3) It usually is, but I don’t mind, as I don’t really want to see men’s cocks.
4) I go retro on this, with Britt Ekland.
5) Not at all.
6) See my answer to question 1.
7) Only if they are ‘body doubles’ for stars who don’t want to strip.
8) Probably, because they all do. But I would be embarrassed, for sure. (Might need a willy double!)
9) I wasn’t really aware of anyone making that big a deal about on-screen nudity anymore.

That’s a lot of questions! I don’t have an issue with nudity as a whole but I think I’d be unlikely to do it if I were an actress. I do think it’s unbalanced though. We see so many nude ladies but very few nude men.

As a cinema and media scholar, I have explored this topic many times. And honestly, I come to the same conclusion each time I apply a critical analysis lens to the–some might say–controversial topic. Here’s the long and short of it. Provided that the nudity reinforces a character or adds to the plot, then it is necessary. When the nudity is simply added for spectacle or to get a particular rating from the MPAA, then that makes it unnecessary. It all boils down to how it is used in the story. For instance, too use a recent example, the nudity in the strip club in “Deadpool” was not necessary because our attention should have only been on Wade and Vanessa. However, the nudity in the sex scenes was necessary for scene believability and integrity. That is the difference. As long as it is actually part of the plot itself or character development, then it needs to be in the movie or television show (though, television is really a different animal).

Great topic. I’m in the modern minority but I’ve never seen the use for it. I know the reasons it’s used, but for decades truly creative minds have been able to tell the stories with the same allure without nudity. That said I’m not condemning filmmakers with different visions of it that me. I do often see it as a crutch but I don’t sit on some lofty snobbish perch when it comes to it.

I do find that older movies can bristle with sexual tension by suggestion and that can be very effective. Sometimes I feel like it’s missing from modern movies.

This is a point of view from Europe where nudity is not an issue especially in France most actresses has done one or two or more in their life (French actresses) We sometimes put frontal nudity men and women. Beside nudity is not an issue in my family.We all saw each other naked. voila.

I have a serious problem with porn: it takes SO MANY videos to make me feel something at all. I’m too critical, it’s a pain. When I watch it for research, it’s easier, as I usually am looking for particular fantasies or situations. But for fun? It’s hard and watch works on one day may not work on the other. What I said for tv also applies to porn: I like to see sentiment and feelings along with the graphic part. Not necessarily romance, but you can sense when there is no desire between the couple, hetero or gay. I like to see the couple’s desire burning on screen 😀 (I’m that critical and that a bore, haha!) And I gree with you, it would be SO BORING for everybody to like the same thing, omg!

Interesting post Vinnie. I’m having migraine issues so I can’t answer all your questions, but I will say we seem to be much more uptigh about nudityt here in the States. I have absolutely no problem with it as long as it’s tastefully done. Gratuitous boon shots in horror movies however tick me off to no end and I definitely think things are sexist in regards to this. While there are more men being featured in nude scenes, it’s still overwhelmingly skewed toward women.

Interesting post – I’d say:
(1) Do you find movie and television nudity to be degrading or tastefully done?
-Somewhere in the middle. Certainly not degrading, as the actors/actresses involved are consenting to go to that level with their performance. If they’re comfortable with it they aren’t degrading themselves. Though it’s not always tastefully done, as far as being relevant to the plot or character development.
(2) When someone mentions nudity in either film or television, what scene springs to mind?
-Most recently, Dressed to Kill. But Titanic was my “first!” 🙂
(3) Do you think that nudity in these mediums is one-sided and sexist?
-I don’t necessarily think so within any specific work, but industry-wide there are certainly more nude scenes of women than of men.
(4) Which actor or actress to you seems to always be nude on screen?
-Kate Winslet
(5) Do you find nudity on screen embarrassing to watch?
-Not really, unless I’m watching something with my parents!
(6) Do you feel there is too much nudity in movies and television today?
-No
(7) Do you think actors and actresses who go nude should be paid more?
-No, if that’s something the script calls for it’s simply part of the role. They can take it or leave it.
(8) If you were and actor or actress, do you think you could do a nude scene?
-No
(9) In your opinion, why do you think people make a big deal when someone goes nude on screen?
-It might be more the sense of familiarity – it’s someone we think we “know” and then all of a sudden we “know” them in a more intimate way. No one has said anything about Alicia Vikander, a relative unknown in mainstream film, and her nude scenes in “Ex Machina” and “The Danish Girl” – but for most audiences, this was likely their introduction to her as an actress.
(10) And lastly, which celebrity was the first you saw nude on screen?
-Probably Eddie Redmayne & Alicia Vikander in “The Danish Girl.”

I personaly think that it’s overused these days and should only be used when needed. As someone else pointed at earlier, old movies did fine without it, so why is it overly needed now?
I’m trying to think of a reason it would be needed in a film to further the plot. is there?
We don’t need to see a sex scene, we can suffice with them under the covers or just knowing they are going to bed.
I think many director now use it just to get people in the seats.
I’m in no way a prude, but as a parent, I know that things have gotten too provocative and I need to be more careful what my kids watch eventhough I know I’ll never be able to catch everything.

I can understand your point of view as a parent Rob. Some movies today just use to get more people watching. As mentioned earlier, older movies didn’t need to show anything and they were just as effective.

1) Well, it depends how it is done, doesn’t it? But mostly, I don’t think it is tasteful if it serves a purpose. I mostly find nudity as a form of humor to be degrading in a way, because mostly it is for mocking and I think that isn’t very tasteful.
2) Michael Fassbender…. I think because it is so talked about. But also Forgetting Sarah Marshall because it was the first male front nudity on screen which kind of paved the way for other penises. 😀
3) Well, I definitely think boobs are more commonly on screen than male parts. Just take Fifty Shades of Grey, that was all about the woman and not at all about the male nudity, which is sad, because it was a movie for women! If a movie aimed towards women has more boobs than man buns, then it is sexist and simply put, disappointing to me as a woman.
4) Oh.. uhm.. Ewan McGregory?
5) I used to, not so much anymore. But I still cringe when I watch a movie with my mom and there’s nudity.
6) Not enough male nudity!!! (see answer 3).
7) Well.. no because then porn actors should be the richest of them all. But it’s a tricky question because it depends on so many factors. Julia Roberts won’t get naked, ever, and an indie actress would, but Julia will still get more money so I guess it depends on many factors, nudity included.
8) Not if it’s meant to serve as a joke, I would hate that.
9) Because nudity is still such a taboo for so many people.
10) Omg.. I can’t say for certain, but I watched The OZ when I was little and I remember a lot of nudity there.

Read the post and all the comments. It can really add to a film if it’s in the right context, but it’s always obvious if it’s done just to get ratings and press attention. The first I remember seeing was someone in Interview with a Vampire. Not a main lead so no idea who she was. I don’t think people should be paid for being nude, part of the discussion if they take the part. Kate Winslet has joked about how often she has, though I remember Demi Moore did loads at one point. At one point a comedian joked that if a film was well done and classily made would she consider keeping her clothes on. As for why people react to nudity, I’m guessing that a lot of people still watch stuff with family.

I’m a history buff, so when Starz and BBC released a mini series based on the War of the Roses (1400s), well, I had to see it. It is a 10 part mini series. Beautifully done…although, it isn’t sooo accurate, hahaha. But it is well done.

Every part has a little….it is done tastefully, in my opinion. And accurately for the time…there is a scene that could be a trigger for some. Anne has been forced to marry a man that dispises her family and he is horrible to her the night they consumate the marriage. He pretty much tells her he hates her and then fucks her…

The main thing that has come up in the responses to this post is that it is mainly women that are seen naked, in comparison with how little men are shown.

Well yes, the female body isn’t as “crude” I suppose. Women have breasts , an ass, and a pussy, whereas men just have an ass and a cock. Pussy and cock are not allowed on mainstream movies, but breasts are… So, obviously, there would be more female nudity…however…if you counted every shirtless guy scene, well….it probably wouldn’t be so different.

I would say more guys are getting naked in movies but that might be because they are the only scenes I pay attention to 😛 Also I think it depends on the movie, epic movies is more of naked butts for guys and boobs for women.
Would I do a nude scene? Possibly. Am a hippie so nudity doesn’t really bother me.
And yes, actors who get naked on screens should be paid more they are exposing more of themselves. Another reason I would do a nude scene. 😀

I think there is definitely too much gratuitous nudity on TV. It does put me off because it relegates sex as just this incredibly casual thing. Which it isn’t for me. I love GoT but it just went too far with it a lot of the time, it just brought nothing to the story.
I can’t right now think of anyone who has made a career out of “being naked” on screen (so little sleep, brain fried) but I know there are some who have.
I think women definitely tend to show more flesh on film or on TV. It’s kind of expected of them and I’m sure they feel the pressure which a man would not be subjected to. It’s like the whole: we have a 60 year old male actor with a 30 year old female interest…it’s pathetic and the reverse would never happen, would it?
The first actress I ever saw naked on screen was Beatrice Dalle in Betty Blue. Did you ever see
that movie? LOVE it to death. A lot of sex but it works though. I don’t even remember the rest of your questions but since I’m on my phone and scrolling is a bitch, I’ll leave it at that – I talked too much as it is 😜

I think if nudity and ses have an important part, I don’t mind. But if it’s just thrown in for the sake of it, it’s a bit ridiculous. Betty Blue sounds interesting.
