Aaron and Jonathan over at Husband and Husband kindly asked me to write a piece about somewhere I’ve encountered in the past that was haunted or had something unexplained in it. This is all for the build up to Halloween, so I hope you enjoy the creepy and true story I’m about to tell.
This story takes place in my childhood home, which I nicknamed Sycamore House. It was a cold Halloween night and I was around the age of 12. Trick or treating had finished and everything was winding down as masks were removed, costumes were put away for another year and candy was counted by my brother and I. It was then when heading upstairs that I realised that my dog was missing. Scouring the house for her, the whole family consisting of my brother, my mother, my father and I, we couldn’t find her. My mother and father assured me that the dog would be fine and that she would turn up After watching a rather gruesome horror movie for which I was way too young to view, I crept into bed as the wind whistled outside. It was around 11:00 when I was awoken by a strange moaning that came from downstairs. Exiting the warmth of my bed and armed with my camera, I flicked the landing light on to illuminate downstairs. There was nothing there, but a strange scratching at the front door. I dared not go down and see what it was for fear of something terrible. The photo below is one I took when looking from the top of the stairs as the scratching subsided. I ran to bed and buried myself beneath the covers, completely terrified.
It wasn’t until the next morning that I felt a licking across my face. I opened my eyes to find my beloved dog on my bed. I later learned that she had got stuck in next doors garden and had found shelter in their shed. But that didn’t explain the moaning or the scratching for the front door. As my dog was stuck in the house behind that backed onto my house, there was no possibility of her being able to get to the front of my house. To this day I still don’t know what the noise was and it still leaves me wondering what it was all those years ago. Some people may dismiss my story as just the workings of a child’s mind but I know there was something there.

It sounds like a tale indeed, V. But tell me, why did you get out of bed and pick up a camera, then take the photo? Were you expecting something spectral to appear in it?
Cheers, Pete.

Photography has always been my passion Pete. And my camera was on my bed side table. You are right that I wanted to catch something ghostly at play.

Cool story! Spooky! Neat that you took a picture.
I had an experience once… In the 80s, I once spent the night at my cousin’s house. It was an old Victorian house, gigantic red brick with a widow’s walk and everything (even though it was nowhere near water). Inside would have been gorgeous back in the day. Sweeping staircase, huge rooms with high ceilings, all the woodwork…
Anyway, the place had a dedicated staircase to get up to the attic. The bedroom I had was across the hall from the base of those stairs. Around 2am, I was woken to a cold room and clearly heard measured, heavy footsteps on those attic stairs. I turned on the light and looked out at the stairs – nothing there. Talk about trouble going back to sleep after that! 🙂

Yeah, sure was creepy! I mentioned it in the morning and they all said they’d heard the steps. I mean, thanks for telling me afterwards! Hahaha.

Meant to mention, that house is now long-demolished.
Question: What happens if a place is haunted and it gets torn down? Where do the spirits go? Interesting!

vinnieh said:
Well in most horror movies that I’ve seen, the spirits remain.

Interesting! Well, since they built a new house on the site after tearing down that big old majestic one, whatever it was that I heard that night must now be haunting that new house!

Love it! I used to do paranormal investigations (post coming up soon… Fad number ‘take your pick’!). I’ve seen / felt so many things happen that can’t be explained. Non-believers always find some reason for events, but I’m convinced there’s something other worldly involved. Even if not, makes for a great story!

When I was a kid I was scared to sleep with my door open because someone would always stand above my bed while I slept. I could see the figure through my sheets and it scared the crap out of me.
I asked my mom if it was her or my dad and they both said no. They still say I imagined the whole thing, but I’m not so sure.

That’s so eerie, I used to always leave my door open so a little bit of light was there. Something about darkness creeped me out.

I was. I was only 6 years old when it started happening to me. I couldn’t sleep most nights. My parents thought it was night terrors, but I still think it was real.

This is like the perfect ‘scary story’ to tell around a campfire on Halloween night! I’ve had a few strange incidents myself and had even been on a ghost investigation team in my area for a few years.

Dude, that was scary – I love it! Aaron & Jonathan need to have a “share-your-scare” blog-a-thon or something.
So, did you ever check the other side of the front door for scratch marks?

They are having a blogathon like that. I did check for scratch marks, but there appeared to be nothing, spooky.
