With Spectre being released at the end of the month and my excitement going into overdrive, I thought it was time I found out what people made of the song for it. Sam Smith’s “Writing’s On The Wall” seems to have divided opinion a lot but has proved a big success on the charts. I must admit I wasn’t sure about the song at first, but it is slowly growing on me. So what do you think of the song? Does it have the right Bond flavour? Whatever you make of it, let me know.
I hate it myself, background music is very Bond-esque and it has interesting lyrics but his vocals are just not suited for a Bond theme in my opinion!

Sounds a little feely for a Bond song, but I’m still excited. We’ve already got our dated planned out – our VIP cinema has a 007 martini on the menu, so we’ll be leaving on wobbly legs!

Hi Fernando, been a while since we last spoke. I did some body acceptance posts that have gone down well, hop you like them. They’re part of the Love Your Bum series.

I think the music is good, but the song is very poor. Not a good Bond theme. The video does give us a few extra glimpses of Spectre though, so that’s good.

It certainly has been received with a mixed reception, I’m wondering how it will go with the title sequence.

The title sequence will need to be extra good to make this theme tune work on any level, still it will be interesting to reassess opinion on the song after seeing it in context with the film. Doubt my opinion of the song will change, but you never know.

I always like the title sequences, hope this song can go with it.

Yes, the titles in the Bond films are always a highlight, fingers crossed the song works with them well

A huge highlight, the titles are a visual embodiment of the themes that are soon to follow.

I think it’s dreadful. It sounds quite Bond-y for the first few seconds, but then degenerates into utter blandness.
It’s destined to be a pub quiz question everyone gets wrong — “which is the only Bond song to have got to number 1?” No one will be guessing this in a few years’ time!

The music fits Bond very well, and I like the lyrics too – but I really don’t like Sam Smith. At some points in this song, he dissolves into wailing so much that you can’t make out the lyrics!

It does have the orchestral feeling of a Bond song that’s a definite plus.

I have refused to listen to it until I can witness it within the context of the film, along with the credits sequence. Until then, I can’t judge it, it’s too early.

Unfortunately, at this point, I’m not a fan (although songs do grow on me). The instrumentals are definitely Bond, but it all seems a little wet… Or angsty and emotional. It just doesn’t seem to have the high impact drama that I associate with Bond films and their theme tunes.
That said, it may work well with the film because at the moment, I’m not that excited about it – the trailer reminded me of Quantum of Solace (which I hated), seeming too ‘feely’.
But it’s Bond, so I’ll watch it and ultimately love it (unless it really is like Q of S… Then I’ll have to break up with Daniel Craig!)

I hate it! And I think the majority have the same opinion if Twitter is anything to go by. Especially as Shirley Bassey “out-trended” Sam on the day of the song’s release. It seemed like only Sam Smith fans and celebrities who have to be diplomatic and say a good word about it tweeted positively about the song. In my opinion, his voice just does not suit a Bond theme song one bit. This is on a par with Madonna’s Die Another Day. Both are just not suited to sing a Bond theme song.
I’m really looking forward to Spectre, and I hope it is a return to classic Bond (Casino Royale) rather than character/drama driven stuff like QoS and Skyfall, (although I did like Skyfall).

I am a fan of Sam Smith’s previous work. Great lyrics, unusual voice, lots of emotion, and English too!
I am not a fan of Bond films, as I may have mentioned.
Put the two together, and you have a Sam Smith song that I don’t like, accompanying a film that I will never see, and pleasing neither Bond soundtrack aficionados, or Smith fans.
All a bit of a mess, don’t you think?
Best wishes, Pete.

I haven’t heard it and I probably don’t want to until I see the movies. Besides, Sam Smith is a wanker.

His music is crap and he sounds like a chode.

I like it – has a lot in common with Portishead’s orchestral sound. The tragi-ballad aspect does make me wonder what type of Bond film I’m in for, but I think I rather like that effect. 😀

There is something tragic about the song have to agree with you there. I can see the similarities with Portishead.

It’s a mistake releasing the song ahead of the movie, it loses so much impact. They’re such money grabbing bastards.
Just listening now, it sounds alright! I liked the big beginning. Sounds more generic now but the music is still Bond-esque and in the context of the movie could be great.

You make a very valid point. Sometimes it is so much better hearing the song within the context of the film.

It certainly can mean more yes. It could just be me though. I don’t even necessarily watch trailers before movies, I just like to watch them as they are. It’s like when people download scripts for anticipated movies, it’s a cool idea I’m not saying it’s not, but it does slightly ruin the viewing experience!

I could never download an expected script before I see a movie, it would completely ruin it.

While it’s definitely not one of my favorites, I think it definitely goes with the Bond theme. I think Emma is right though. They shouldn’t release these before the movie comes out.

It does have that Bond sound with the brass section and the sweeping strings.

would rather they’d given Jack Savaretti the job. This is OK, a bit of a durge though.

Waiting to hear it when I watch Spectre. Haven’t heard it yet. Been reading it ‘s quite bland and atrocious. But I will try to be objective when I see the movie.

Hey dude, I haven’t heard it yet myself. At first I was like “I’ll listen to it later.” But then time just passed and I then I couldn’t be arsed. To be honest now I’m actually avoiding it so I’ll be fresh when I see it in a few weeks. For me I haven’t loved any of the Bond themes since Chris Cornell’s song for Casino Royale (even though Quantum of Solace’s is a guilty pleasure), and even though Skyfall by Adelle was nice, it didn’t have the energy or fire that some of the more classic themes have had.

A lot of people have put of listening to it so they can see what it sounds like within the movie.

BAD may be one of the very worst Bond tunes ever, I mean, this is a million miles away from Diamonds are Forever, just compare Sam Smith to the great Bond themes and he quickly slips down the rankings to somewhere near the bottom.

I’ve heard some pretty scathing things about it.
