Personally, I believe you need music in a film. It can bring out emotions on-screen and create atmosphere. Here are a few of my favourite soundtracks and scores.
Michael Nyman’s score builds with evocative and melancholy abandon helping accentuate the main themes of the Jane Campion film. The main theme is a beautifully constructed thing of beauty that leaves you feeling like you are on a journey.
The Hours
Philip Glass’ score is like life itself, filled with both joy and heartbreak. The score is like a rumination on the complexities of the human mind and the various vicissitudes that life inflicts upon us. A haunting and poetic listen.
Zbigniew Preisner’s score brims with a perfect sense of period drama. The music helps explore the themes of awakening in the soul and spiritual redemption, whilst also capturing a childlike sensibility.
Doctor Zhivago
Maurice Jarre’s memorable soundtrack to the epic love story set against the Russian Revolution is one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard. It stays in my head whenever I hear it. Just hearing the beginning of the lilting “Lara’s Theme” transports me to a snow covered Russia.
Part 2 will follow shortly

Nice post! Amelie would be personal favourite, or Dancer in The Dark. Possibly La Haine too. There’s so many greats…

So many great scores out there. I’m extraordinarily fond of Ron Goodwin’s music for The Omega Man – it hits just the right tone of melancholy for the movie.

I think that Ennio Morricone produced some of the best movie music ever. Here are three of my favorites.
Once Upon a Time in the West
The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly
Days of Heaven

I agree, can’t go wrong with a bit of Morricone, Two mules for Sister Sara has got to be up there, played down but really works.

Man, I have to see these movies! A couple of them (The Piano, The Hours) are in my queue, but I have to add the others. I always love good scores — they add quite a lot to a film. Might I mention Requiem for a Dream? That’s my favorite film score of all time. That theme has been remixed and used in so many different things over the years.

My favourite movie composer is probably Bernard Herrmann and I was fascinated by the use of a big chunk of his music in THE ARTIST from his score for VERTIGO. Equally as good are at least a dozen scores of his, from the romance of MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS and THE GHOST AND MRS MUIR to the ethereal FAHRENHEIT 451 and the jazzy darkness of TAXI DRIVER, his final score – all remain mesmerising.

Oh so many favorites….How about a favorite score for a terrible movie: WALK ON THE WILD SIDE, scored by Elmer Bernstein which also has a fabulous opening credits sequence. Just watch and listen to that and cancel the rest of the film. 🙂
I’ve also loved many of John Williams’ scores, especially: SUPERMAN, STAR WARS, and RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK. Also love the incredible score for THE BLACK STALLION by Carmine Coppola. Believe it or not, I love the stirring score for the first PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN film, scored by Klaus Badelt, as well the score for the first STAR TREK film

The soundtrack recording that I enjoy the most is “Lawrence of Arabia” with music composed by Maurice Jarre whose “Doctor Zhivargo” soundtack comes a close second.
